Behind the Scenes: Pre-Kitten Season

Josephine TempongkoUncategorized12 Comments

We’re just starting to feel the potential of spring coming, and that means something very specific to Humane Society Silicon Valley: kitten season is right around the corner. As the weather gets warmer every year, we see tons of kittens start to show up at HSSV needing care and loving homes.

Just a few weeks ago, the first “bottle babies” of the season arrived at HSSV. It was a litter of 3 kittens, all just days old with their eyes still closed. The good samaritan that brought the kittens in had found them by a nearby road, and one kitten had a deep gash on his front leg.

We took the kittens in and fitted the injured kitten with the tiniest cast anyone had ever seen to keep the wound clean while it healed. Then, the 3 little kittens were sent to an experienced foster home who would be able to provide them with the round-the-clock care they would need for the following weeks.

The injured kitten soon showed his foster mom that he wasn’t going to let his injury slow him down. He continued to grow bigger and bigger and show off his little but fierce personality. He was finally able to have his cast removed once the wound had healed and he’ll have no permanent affects from the injury. He’ll be able to walk, run, and jump normally, which was a huge relief for our Medical Team. In a few short weeks, he and his siblings will “graduate” from their foster home and be ready to find their forever homes.

While kitten season is slowly ramping up, our Rescue Team is ensuring we’re using our space and resources to their fullest. While our shelter isn’t full to the brim with kittens requiring care, the Rescue Team has been filling that space by transporting adult cats from partner shelters who are struggling with the high numbers of cats in their care. Every week, the Rescue Team is visiting local partner shelters and bringing back dozens and dozens of felines, including some needing extensive medical care, such as cats and kittens with ringworm.

We’re so grateful to have the ability to help our local community and partners in need this way. Thanks to our flexible team, our wonderful adopters, and the many, many people who support us along the way, we’re able to quickly pivot to ensure we’re providing a safety net to the animals who need us the most at any particular time. Thank you for being a part of that incredible village!

  1. Hi! I am hoping to get a girl kitten in white or cream color. Can you let me know when there is one available?

    1. Hi there! I would suggest keeping an eye on our website at hssv.org/cats – all available cats and kittens will be posted there. New felines are being added and adopted frequently, so we aren’t able to update individuals on specific preferences.

  2. I am in awe and gratitude of the dedication and volunteer service that goes into making a safe and loving environment for these adorable bundles of JOY!
I am sure you have touched these sweet fur angels LIVES in ways you could not imagine. Thank you so VERY much for all that your organization does in front of the scenes, behind the scenes and every which way possible. πŸ’―πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌπŸˆπŸ‡πŸ•πŸˆβ€β¬›πŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸ₯°

  3. Our cat Spanky lost his brother a year ago, due to health issues he was born with. Spanky is now 4 years old and can use a kitten companion and the family would love one too! Please let us know when kittens come in and also, kindly let us know, when you will be having kitten adoption promotions.

  4. Hi, I’m very interested in adopting a young cat or better a kitten. I recently lost both my sweetheart husband and precious 18 yr. old cat due to smoke inhalation from a home fire. Need a sweet pet friend to bring happiness back and companionship for sure.

  5. I’m looking to adopt a long haired kitten to be a companion to my cat and my family. I’m open to having a black kitty too.

  6. Hi, Alexandra! My name is Alexandra too, lol. Anyway, will there be kittens available by 04/13 this Thursday?!
Thank you! Just lost my cat of 15 years two weeks ago and would love to give love to a new addition.
