Lost and Found Pets
Whether you’re missing a pet or have found one, quick action can make all the difference. Follow the steps below to help reunite pets and families safely.
Are You Missing Your Pet?
If your pet is missing, act quickly and stay persistent. Taking these steps right away can improve your chances of bringing them home.

Register Your Pet as Lost
Register your pet as lost with Petco Love Lost and with your local shelter, either online or in person. This increases the chances of being matched quickly if your pet is found.

Start in your Immediate Area
Talk with neighbors and ask them to keep an eye out, and leave your contact information so they can reach you quickly if they spot your pet. Walk the neighborhood, call your pet’s name, and check common hiding spots such as yards, garages, sheds, and under porches.

Post Flyers and Share Online
Create a clear “Lost Pet” flyer with a photo and your contact information and post it around your neighborhood. You can generate one using Pet Bond (not affiliated with HSSV).
Share your pet’s information online through:
● Local Facebook Lost and Found groups:
● Nextdoor
● Pawboost
What to Do If You Found an Animal?
If you’ve found a lost animal, taking a few simple steps can help reunite them with their family quickly and safely.

Check with People in the Area
If the animal is wearing a collar, call or text the number on the tag right away.

Scan for a Microchip
Bring the animal to a local veterinarian or shelter to be scanned for a microchip. This is free and often the fastest way to locate an owner.

Search the Immediate Area
If you found a dog, walk them around the neighborhood where they were found and ask nearby residents if they recognize the pet. Many lost pets live close by.

Report the Found Pet
Visit or contact local shelters to file a found pet report. This helps match the animal with anyone who has filed a lost report.

Share Online and Post Flyers
Take a clear photo and post it on platforms such as Finding Rover, Nextdoor, and local lost-and-found pet groups. Posting simple “Found Pet” flyers in the area can also speed up reunification.
If you need guidance at any point, your local shelter can help coordinate next steps and appropriate care.
I Found Kittens!
Before intervening, pause. Mother cats often leave briefly to search for food and will return. Check out our full guide on best practices here.
