Pets and People: Hailey Sets You Up For Success

"You're not doing this alone. You're joining a whole community that wants to help you succeed."

At HSSV, adoption is just the beginning.

It’s the first chapter of a love story between a pet and their person. For first-time adopters, that journey begins with Hailey.

“I’ve loved animals my whole life, and I get how big this moment feels [for a new adopter]. I’m here to make sure people feel prepared for life with their new friend.”

Hailey joined HSSV’s Adoptions Team in 2019, and she’s been guiding new pet parents through their first steps ever since. “They come in thinking they have to know everything,” she says. “But they don’t. Our job is to make sure they leave here feeling confident and supported.”

Hailey has answered every kind of question you can imagine: What to feed them, how to introduce a pet to children, what toys are safe, how to manage the first night at home. And sometimes, it’s the small stuff that makes the biggest difference.

“I once spent 30 minutes with someone just talking about cat treats. That’s what they needed to feel ready, and that’s okay! We take our time with people.”

“What sets HSSV apart is what happens after the adoption,” she says. “We don’t say, ‘Goodbye!’ and hope it works out. We stay with you.”

We’re here for new adopters every step of the way.

New adopters are encouraged to take advantage of our extensive resource library, or sign up for training that will provide enrichment and strengthen their bond with their pet. If something feels off, Hailey wants adopters to know help is just a few clicks away through our behavior helpline. We’re also here for any pet parent seeking affordable basic veterinary services like vaccination, or the treatment of minor wounds to keep pets happy, healthy, and home. And when times are tough, HSSV’s Pet Pantry is here to support those in need with pet food and basic supplies, no questions asked.

“These services are part of the adoption experience,” Hailey says. “We don’t expect anyone to figure it all out on their own. We’re here for every stage.”

Hailey recalls a time a family was adopting a puppy through HSSV’s Home-to-Home program. The parents had experience, but the kids didn’t.

“One of the girls brought a full notebook of questions, pages and pages,” Hailey says. “We sat down and went through every single one. She was so thoughtful, and you could tell how ready she was to love that dog. That’s when I know it’s going to be a great match, when people want to learn.”

That’s what Hailey loves most: Helping people beyond their first steps, so they can grow into the role of pet parent with all the resources they need to thrive together. “You’re not doing this alone,” she says. “You’re not just adopting a pet. You’re joining a whole community that wants to help you succeed.”
