HSSV is joining in the nationwide celebration of Veterinary Technicians for Veterinary Technician Week—a time to recognize the skilled professionals who care for animals with expertise, empathy, and heart. This week, we’re spotlighting two of our incredible veterinary technicians who bring that dedication to life every day.
Meet Veronica Rivas. For as long as she can remember, Veronica has been drawn to animals.

Growing up, she spent summers in Mexico caring for neighborhood dogs. She’d even pick off ticks unaware it wasn’t the best idea, but certain it was the right thing to do. “I always loved animals more than Barbies or toys,” she laughs. “I’d see a dog with puppies in a corner and try to save them.”
That early compassion guided Veronica back to her true calling after exploring other career paths. Once she discovered the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) program, she knew she’d found her purpose.
“I tried other things, but nothing held my attention like this. This is where my heart is.”
From Dentistry to Rescue Care
Before joining Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV), Veronica spent a decade in general practice, developing a specialty in dentistry. But her connection to HSSV actually began years earlier—during her clinical rotations as a student.
“I remember coming here for my first clinical rotation,” she recalls. “The techs were so knowledgeable, and the pace of the work was incredible. I thought it was amazing how they could spay and neuter so many cats and return them to the community. That stuck with me.”

Years later, she found her way back. Today, Veronica plays a vital role on HSSV’s veterinary team, blending her technical expertise with genuine care for every animal she helps.
The Reward of Seeing Pets Heal
No two days look alike for Veronica. Mornings often begin with treatments and medications, followed by appointments with foster animals, surgeries, and community clinic support. Whether she’s monitoring anesthesia, performing dental work, or assisting in complex surgeries, every task contributes to the same goal—helping pets heal.
“The most rewarding part is seeing pets get better—and educating owners so they can continue that care at home. When a pet comes in sick and leaves happy and healthy, that’s the best feeling.”

That sense of reward extends beyond the medical. Here, Veronica sees the full journey—from intake to recovery to adoption—and sometimes even the happy updates years later.
“I love reading the adoption success stories. When people come back and say, ‘He’s been my best friend for years,’ that’s amazing.”
The Emotional Side of Care
It’s a role that requires deep emotional resilience. “Sometimes we help make difficult decisions about what’s best for the pet,” Veronica says. “That can weigh on us, but it’s always about doing what’s right for the animal.”
Her empathy shines through in the way she talks about each case—especially one that recently stayed with her. A dog came through HSSV’s Community Pet Clinic in need of urgent dental care. After the team lost contact with his owner, the dog eventually arrived at HSSV through another channel. Veronica and her colleagues worked for hours performing extractions to ease his pain. Weeks later, she saw a photo of the dog reunited with his grateful owner.
“It was so sweet to see them together again. I love that everyone here goes above and beyond for pets and their people. You really feel the collaboration.”
Advice for Future Veterinary Technicians
When asked what she’d tell someone considering a career in veterinary medicine, Veronica doesn’t hesitate.
“Start early. I wish I had. This career is always rewarding—you see the difference you make every single day.”
For Veronica, it’s not just a job—it’s a calling rooted in compassion, curiosity, and the joy of helping animals heal.
A Light for Animals and the People Who Love Them
From her early days caring for stray dogs in Mexico to her work today at HSSV, Veronica’s journey reflects everything RVT Appreciation Week is meant to celebrate.
Her story is one of dedication, skill, and heart—a reminder that behind every healed pet and every grateful family is a veterinary technician like Veronica, making that care possible.
