Beginning Puppy Training (8 Weeks - 18 Weeks Old)

Beginning Puppy Training is the perfect first training class for your new puppy (8 weeks – 18 weeks old). Our goal is to provide a safe, fun learning environment that will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to successfully work with your puppy to get the kind of behavior you like, both at home and out in the world!

At Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV), we know that socialization is the single most important part of raising a puppy. Socialization is the process of introducing pups to all kinds of things, experiences, noises, and settings in a positive context while they’re young so that they’ll be comfortable, well-adjusted adult dogs. Most of the aggression, fear, shyness, and other serious behavior problems we see in adult dogs stem from under-socialization during puppy hood.

Coursework includes:

  • Learning to effectively communicate with your puppy
  • Teaching your puppy to overcome any fear of new things, people or experiences
  • Fundamental behaviors like sit, down and stay
  • Come (recall) one of the most important behaviors for your pup to stay safe
  • Polite Greeting: teach your pup not to jump on you, other family members and friends
  • Loose-leash walking so you’re not pulled down the street when your pup grows up
  • Learning how to teach your pup new behaviors
  • Opportunities for puppy playtime

We’ll also help you work through the basics of bringing your new puppy home. We’ll talk about housetraining issues and “naughty” behaviors like chewing and mouthing. We’ll help you learn how to teach your pup to be comfortable when left alone and how to handle your puppy’s body so they are comfortable when seeing the vet or the groomer.

This class is designed specifically to meet the training and socialization needs of young pups 8 - 18 weeks old when class begins. Your puppy must be 10 days past their initial vaccination for DHPP on the first day of class. You will be required to provide proof of vaccination. Beginning Puppy Training is six consecutive weeks long, each session lasts 50 minutes. The first class session is for humans only; pups attend sessions 2-6 with you and/or your entire family.

Beginning Older Puppy Training (4 ½ Months to 8 Months Old)

Beginning Older Puppy Training is the perfect first training class for your new older puppy. Our goal is to provide a safe, fun learning environment that will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to successfully work with your older puppy to get the kind of behavior you like, both at home and out in the world!

Intermediate Puppy Training (18 weeks - 12 Months Old)

Keep building on your pup’s great start!

Intermediate Puppy Training is the perfect second class for your new puppy. In this class, you’ll expand on and refine all those techniques and behaviors you learned in Beginning Puppy Training.

Our goal is to provide a safe and fun learning environment that will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to successfully work with your pup to get the kind of behavior you like, both at home and out in the real world. This is especially helpful for your pup’s “teenage” period.

In this class we’ll continue to present you and your dog with real life challenges so that you can learn how to get your pup to work with you wherever you happen to be. Our classes are focused on giving you and your dog the tools to be comfortable and confident wherever you may be! You’ll even learn some fun tricks so your dog can impress friends and family alike! Our Beginning Puppy Training and Intermediate Puppy Training classes are a complete training track for puppies.

Intermediate Puppy Training is six consecutive weeks long.  Pups attend every session with you and/or your entire family. This class is designed specifically to meet the training needs of pups that are 18 weeks - 12 months old when class begins and have recently completed a beginning level puppy training class. You will be required to provide proof of current, age appropriate vaccinations.
