Humane Society Silicon Valley Opens Adoption Center in PETCO Sunnyvale Grand Opening Celebration Nov. 13, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

MILPITAS, Calif., November 3, 2010 – – In an effort to find more pets loving homes and raise community awareness for shelter animals, Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) will open a second satellite adoption center at the Sunnyvale PETCO store, 160 E. El Camino Real. PETCO and the PETCO Foundation have pledged $140,000 toward construction, supplies and maintenance of the new adoption center.

The grand opening for the new adoption center will be Saturday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Sunnyvale Mayor’s office will take place at 10a.m. Members of the public are encouraged to visit the center to meet adoptable animals and learn about HSSV’s programs and services.

“HSSV has operated a successful satellite adoption center in PETCO in the El Paseo de Saratoga Shopping Center for three plus years, and we are thrilled to be opening a second adoption center to serve the community of Sunnyvale,” said Carol Novello, HSSV’s president. “Community partnerships like the one we have with PETCO are essential to fulfilling our mission to save and enhance lives. By partnering with PETCO, we are able to find more homes for animals and spread the word to think adoption first.”

“PETCO and the PETCO Foundation are committed to helping as many homeless animals as possible find the loving, forever homes they deserve, and hosting adoptions in PETCO stores across the country is one of the most effective ways we do that,” said Paul Jolly, executive director of the PETCO Foundation and a PETCO vice president. “We’re proud to support HSSV in this important project to help find more homes for animals in need in the Sunnyvale community.”

Novello said having animals available for adoption at PETCO helps HSSV reach out to members of the public who might not visit HSSV’s Animal Community Center in Milpitas. “Our adoption center at the Saratoga Shopping Center is very cozy and our new location in Sunnyvale will be just as low key and comfortable. People will be able to sit and play with a cat or bunny and see how fabulous shelter animals really are.”

The Sunnyvale adoption center will have shelter cats, rabbits and other small companion animals available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Adoptable dogs from the shelter will be showcased at PETCO every other Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All cats, dogs and rabbits available for adoption will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and health and behavior tested. Both satellite adoption centers are managed by a full-time manager and volunteers. Volunteers do everything from socializing and caring for the animals, to handling adoptions.
