Humane Society Silicon Valley to Waive Adult Cat Adoption Fees to Encourage Public to Adopt

MILPITAS, Calif., July 16, 2010 – – Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) announced today that it will waive the adoption fee for all cats age one year or older. Beginning this Saturday, July 17, HSSV’s Home Homeward Bound Adoption Scholarship program will pay the $175.00 adoption fee for any cat age 1 year or older. The special will continue through Sunday, August 1.

“We’re overflowing with cats and kittens and sound like one big meow zone these days,” says Beth Ward, chief operating officer for HSSV. “While we do not have any trouble finding homes for the many kittens in our care, it is more challenging to find homes for our adult cats that are often overlooked by people who gravitate toward the cute and cuddly kittens.”

The Homeward Bound Scholarship program, funded through donations, waives the adoption fee for long-term animal guests. “By highlighting our long-term pets and sponsoring their adoption fees, the Homeward Bound program shines a spotlight on these special animals and gives them a ‘paw up’ over the competition to win hearts and find a home,” Ward says. “Due to the large volume of cats in our care, we decided to extend our Homeward Bound program to all cats one year or older.

Ward says while HSSV keeps all of animals in the adoption program no matter how long it takes to find them homes, fewer adoptions impedes HSSV’s ability to rescue other animals from nearby shelters that are in danger of being euthanized due to lack of space or resources.

“We want the public to know that when they adopt an animal from us, they not only gain a best friend for life, they help save two more animals by creating space at our facility for us to rescue another animal in need, which frees up space at another shelter.”

The Homeward Bound Scholarship cat adoption special will be good at HSSV’s two locations: Humane Society Silicon Valley’s Animal Community Center, 901 Ames Ave, Milpitas and HSSV’s Satellite Adoption Center in PETCO, 500 El Paseo de Saratoga, San Jose.

HSSV is open for adoptions Monday through Friday 10:30 am - 7:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. The adoption hotline is 408.262.2133 ext. 150. To view adoptable animals, visit www.hssv.org.

HSSV’s Animal Community Center is the first-of-its-kind in the nation to offer an Adoption Program  with a full spectrum of pet and community services under one solar roof: A Medical Center specializing in affordable spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping and testing services; A Community Dog Park and Training Center; Doggie Daycare, Boarding, and Grooming; An Education Center with programs for children and teens; A Community Events Room that can be rented by groups for meetings; and a Whole Pets store. All proceeds from these services support HSSV’s life saving work.
