Humane Society Silicon Valley Board Elects Five New Members

MILPITAS, Calif., November 8, 2010 – – The Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) board of directors has elected Marilyn Anderson, Kara Berg, Gayle Haworth, Kate Mulligan and Steve Sullins to the board. The board also elected board member Linda Netsch as board secretary. Berg and Mulligan, both previous board members, re-joined the board after taking sabbaticals.

“I am thrilled to be working with such an accomplished team of diverse professionals,” said Melissa Dyrdahl, HSSV board chair. “I look forward to working with our board as our Animal Community Center continues to strengthen the foundation of human-animal relationships by teaching people about animals, their needs, and the important contributions they make to society.” 

“We are delighted to have such talented individuals join our board,” said Carol Novello, HSSV president. “Their strong business skills, combined with their love for animals, and philanthropic commitment to our mission will help us engage our community in our life-saving work as we continue to establish HSSV as the premier Animal Community Center in the country.”

Marilyn AndersonMarilyn Anderson’s love of animals is a life long passion and she has always been involved in helping secure adoptions and assistance for homeless animals, foster care, animal welfare and a variety of animal causes throughout her life.

Anderson’s professional experience has primarily been with the airline industry managing international in flight services operations on the Atlantic and the Pacific routes as well as managing the development of the airline’s training programs and employee assistance programs.

Anderson holds a B.A. degree from Stanford University and holds a master’s degree in psychology from Pepperdine University. She is an active volunteer in the Stanford community and has been a recipient of the Award of Merit for volunteers.

Kara BergKara Berg is a huge animal lover and has adopted several dogs over the years from HSSV. She currently works for her family’s business Berg & Berg Enterprises, LLC, industrial real estate developers in Silicon Valley, where she is responsible for property management, accounts payable and the company’s SEC filings.

Berg served as a member of the Board of Directors for Humane Society Silicon Valley from 2003 to 2009 and most recently co-chaired HSSV’s gala event, The Fur Ball 2010.  Kara has two adopted dogs from HSSV, Beddy and Swayze.

Additionally, Berg has worked with a number of different non-profit organizations.  She has been involved in fundraising efforts for her old grade school, worked on organizing a charity event for the American Heart Association and has served on the Board of Trustee’s at Villa Montalvo.  She currently serves on the board of the 49ers Foundation.

Gayle HaworthGayle Haworth is a dedicated animal lover with a focus on protecting and loving older, more difficult to place animals.

Haworth is Chief Business Officer of ROXRO PHARMA, Inc. a company focused on the development of novel new medications to treat pain.  Previously she was Senior Vice President of Abgenix, Inc. a premier biotechnology firm, now part of Amgen, Inc.  In her extensive career in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, Haworth has held senior management roles in sales, marketing, business development and operations. 

Haworth and her husband also actively volunteer in their community to help non-English speaking adults and children improve their language skills and achieve academic success. Haworth has a B.S. degree in business administration from Notre Dame de Namur University and a M.B.A. from Santa Clara University.

Kate MulliganKate Mulligan has served on the HSSV Board of Directors from 2003 – 2009. She chaired the board for four of these six years, during a critical period of fundraising, planning and construction that led to the opening of our new Animal Community Center. Mulligan rejoined the Board in July 2010, following a year sabbatical. In addition, to her commitment to HSSV, Mulligan serves on the Board of the Foundation for the Future at Menlo-Atherton High School.

Mulligan worked for 17 years in the biotechnology, diagnostics and life science sectors, holding senior marketing and business development roles. She received her M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management and she holds a B.S. in nutritional sciences from UC Berkeley. Mulligan and her family have two dogs, Bear and Stinson, both adopted from HSSV.

Steve SullinsSteve Sullins is an audit partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP's San Jose office, where he serves a variety of clients in the technology industry, and has previously served clients in the firm's London, Detroit and Saint Louis offices. Sullins has also served on the boards of The Children's Center of Wayne County, and the Hoyleton Children's Home Foundation.

Sullins holds an M.B.A. from Northwestern University and a B.S. in accounting from the University of Colorado.  Sullins and his wife share their home with Jasper, their Boston terrier.
