Adopt shelter cats in November to save lives!

MILPITAS, Calif., November 1, 2010 – – Santa Clara County is suffering from an all too common event, “kitten season.” All summer long thousands of homeless cats and kittens have been flooding the local shelters. Surrendered from financially-strapped pet owners and/or delivered to them in litters from unneutered “mothers.”

NOW is the time for action! In an effort to get these fabulous felines into new homes, four Bay Area animal shelters are offering dramatically reduced adoption fees of $10 for cats and kittens for the entire month of November! These cats are set to go, having already been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro chipped, health and behavior tested.

Beginning November 1st through the end of the month, the following agencies will be participating in this joint adoption event:

  • City of Palo Alto Animal Services
  • City of San Jose Animal Care Center
  • Humane Society Silicon Valley
  • Town Cats

Santa Clara County Animal Care & Control in San Martin (www.southcountypets.com) and Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority (www.svaca.com) are also looking for homes for their adoptable cats and kittens however they cannot participate in the special pricing.  Cats and kittens at these facilities will be adopted at their regular adoption fee.

Here is the facility information for the participating agencies:
City of Palo Alto Animal Services
City of San Jose Animal Care Center
Humane Society Silicon Valley
Town Cats

Background Information
How does this happen? Cats have a “season” for reproducing that generally begins late December and runs into the beginning of Fall. So by mid-January each year female cats are beginning to get pregnant throughout Santa Clara County. Their pregnancies last about 60 days and then the rain of kittens begins by mid-March and that cycle continues throughout the Summer until the cold weather arrives. Typically adult cats feel the effect of this kitten season in shelters because everyone wants a “kitten” and the adult cats get overlooked. As the shelters get overwhelmed the kittens begin to grow up in shelters or in foster care. Everyone is looking for young ones, so the competition is fierce!

Your help is needed to save lives.
