Board of Directors and Honorary Board

Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) is a private, non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization governed by a volunteer board of directors who work tirelessly on behalf HSSV and the thousands of homeless animals that come through our doors. Additionally, HSSV has an honorary board comprised of eight distinguished and committed leaders who share the organization’s mission to save and enhance lives.

Board of Directors Biographies

Len Almalech
Len Almalech joined the HSSV board of directors in July 2005 to fulfill his passion and love for animals.  He is currently the Vice President/General Manager of Enterprise Holdings, which operates Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent A Car and National Car Rental and WeCar in the San Francisco Bay Area. Len oversees over 130 branch locations and four airport locations, with 1600 employees. He also is in charge of Enterprise Fleet Management, Commercial Truck Rental, Car Sales, Rideshare and Risk Management divisions in the San Francisco Region.

In 1979, Len started the expansion of Enterprise Rent-A-Car into California with one location and 20 cars in San Jose, California.  Since then, Enterprise Holdings, Inc. has become the largest Car Rental Company in North America.  With the acquisition of Alamo Rent A Car and National Car Rental in 2008, Enterprise Holdings has over 7,500 branch locations and a fleet in excess of 900,000 rental vehicles.  Presently, Enterprise Holdings, Inc. operates in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany.

Len also sits on the boards of the San Mateo County/Silicon Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, the United Way of the Bay Area Campaign Board, and the United Way of the Bay Area Cabinet Board.  Len holds a Bachelor Degree in Political Science from The City University in New York.  He and his wife, Kimberly, live in Saratoga, CA.

Marilyn Anderson
Marilyn joined the HSSV Board of Directors in June of 2010. Her love of animals is a life long passion and she has always been involved in helping to secure adoptions and assistance for homeless animals, foster care, animal welfare and a variety of animal causes throughout her life.

As a graduate of Stanford, Class of ’69, she has remained an active volunteer in the Stanford community and has been a recipient of the Award of Merit for volunteers. In addition to her BA from Stanford, Marilyn also holds a masters degree in psychology from Pepperdine University.

Marilyn’s professional experience has primarily been with the airline industry managing international in flight services operations on the Atlantic and the Pacific routes as well as managing the development of the airline’s training programs and employee assistance programs.

Having been engaged in various non profit and volunteer activities from child welfare to advocacy for women throughout the world, Marilyn embraces this opportunity to be a part of the HSSV mission of compassion, outreach and education as it relates to strengthening the human-animal bond and protecting our most vulnerable members of the animal kingdom.

Marilyn currently resides in Atherton, California, and is married to Fred D. Anderson, a Co- Founder and Managing Director of Elevation Partners. They are blessed with four very spoiled cats in their household.

Kara Berg
Kara currently works for her family’s business, Berg & Berg Enterprises, LLC, an industrial real estate developer in Silicon Valley, where she is responsible for property management, accounts payable and the company’s public SEC filings. 

Kara served as a member of the Board of Directors for Humane Society Silicon Valley from 2003 to 2009 and most recently co-chaired HSSV’s gala event, The Fur Ball 2010. 
Additionally, Kara has worked with a number of different non-profit organizations.  She has been involved in fundraising efforts for her old grade school, worked on organizing a charity event for the American Heart Association and has served on the Board of Trustee’s at Villa Montalvo. She currently serves on the board of the 49ers Foundation.

When not at work, her adopted dogs Beddy and Swayze take up the majority of her time. Kara enjoys camping, hiking and traveling.

Michael (Mickey) Bonasera
Mickey joined the HSSV board in October of 2006.  He is an Associate Vice President at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in San Jose, where he customizes and manages investments for individuals, corporate and retirement accounts. Previously he served as a financial advisor for Bache & Company and Dean Witter.

Mickey received his degree in Business at Santa Clara University. His professional affiliations include the International Association of Financial Planners and the Investment Management Consultants Association, Inc. 

Mickey’s community involvement includes serving as Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair for Goodwill Industries of Santa Clara County, Treasurer of the Southwest YMCA board and as a member of the advisory board for Boy Scouts of America, Santa Clara County Council.  In addition, he is a past member of Saratoga Rotary. Mickey and his wife, Rita, have three grown daughters and three granddaughters, and share their home with their rescued golden retriever, Cody.

Sue Diekman
Sue Diekman joined HSSV's board in June 2008. She is currently Chair of the Director's Advisory Council at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University and is a past Chair of the Center's Membership Board of Governors. Sue also serves on the boards of directors of the San Francisco Ballet and the East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring program at Stanford. Past affiliations include the boards of Menlo School in Atherton, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside, San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, Business Arts Council in San Francisco and Northern California Grantmakers.

Until she retired in August 1998, Sue was employed by AirTouch Communications, where she was Director of the AirTouch Communications Foundation. Prior to joining AirTouch, Sue was Cultural Program Director of Pacific Telesis Foundation, with responsibility for the foundation's cultural grantmaking as well as national and international exhibitions of the corporation's Ansel Adams collection.

Sue holds a B.A. degree in English Literature and a M.A. degree in Education from Stanford University. She and her husband John are passionate about animals and have two dogs, Rosie and Lucky. They enjoy traveling, the arts, and sports.

Melissa Dyrdahl
Melissa joined the HSSV board on October 2006 and was voted Chair in June 2009.  She is currently CEO and Co-Founder of Bring Light, Inc. (www.bringlight.com), a website for social change that connects donors and charities for more informed and effective online fundraising, and is an Executive in Residence at San Jose State University's Lucas Graduate School of Business where she advises the administration, faculty and students on business leadership, marketing strategy and social media.

Previously Melissa was Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Communications at Adobe Systems where she was a member of the executive team responsible for growing the company from $800M to almost $3B.  In addition to her marketing leadership at Adobe, Melissa was responsible for the company’s Philanthropy and Community Affairs, developing the strategy that resulted in grants and donations of over $15M to nonprofits around the world.  Prior to Adobe, Melissa held management positions at Apple Computer’s software startup Claris (now FileMaker, Inc.) and Hewlett-Packard. Melissa and her husband, Clyde, share their home with two terriers, Tango and Trio.

Gayle M. Haworth

Gayle joined the HSSV Board of Directors in September 2010. Gayle and her husband, Phil, are dedicated animal lovers with a focus on protecting and loving older, more difficult to place animals.

Gayle is Chief Business Officer of ROXRO PHARMA, Inc. a company focused on the development of novel new medications to treat pain.  Previously Gayle was Senior Vice President of Abgenix, Inc. a premier biotechnology firm, now part of Amgen, Inc.  In her extensive career in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, Gayle has held senior management roles in sales, marketing, business development and operations. 

Gayle and Phil also actively volunteer in their community to help non-English speaking adults and children improve their language skills and achieve academic success.

Gayle has a B.S. degree in business administration from Notre Dame de Namur University and a M.B.A. from Santa Clara University.

Ashley King
Ashley King joined the board in January 2010. She is currently a Clinical Research Associate for Genomic Health, Inc., a life science company focused on the development and commercialization of genomic-based clinical laboratory services for cancer that allow physicians and patients to make individualized treatment decisions. Ashley holds a B.S. in Business from Babson College. She and her family love animals and have two dogs, Buddy and Charlie.

Arlene Morris
Arlene Morris joined the board in July 2009. She is President and CEO of Affymax, Inc. in Palo Alto, a 180-person publicly held firm conducting research and development of therapeutic peptides. In 2006, she led the company through a successful IPO, netting $96 million. Prior to Affymax , she held jobs as Senior Vice President, Business Development at Coulter Pharmaceutical and was VP of Business Development at Scios. She held various positions during her 17 years at Johnson & Johnson including VP of Business Development.

In addition to serving on HSSV’s board, Arlene serves on the boards of BIO, MediciNova and Nuon.  Arlene holds a B.A. degree in Biology and Chemistry from Carlow College. Arlene shares her home in California with her dog Willow and her home in Charleston, SC with her husband John Campi.

Kate Mulligan
Kate Mulligan served on the HSSV Board of Directors from 2003 – 2009. She chaired the board for four of these six years, during a critical period of fundraising, planning and construction that led to the opening of our new Animal Community Center. Kate rejoined the Board in July 2010, following a year sabbatical. In addition, to her commitment to HSSV, Kate serves on the Board of the Foundation for the Future at Menlo-Atherton High School.

Previously, Kate worked for 17 years in the biotechnology, diagnostics and life science sectors, holding senior marketing and business development roles.

Kate received her M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management and she holds a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences from UC Berkeley. Kate resides in Menlo Park with her husband, David Mack, her two children, Brianna and Garrett, and their two dogs (adopted from HSSV), Stinson and Bear.

Linda Netsch
Linda Netsch joined the board in July 2009. She is the Founder of Align Consulting, advising clients in preparing for and conducting critical negotiation projects. Linda also leads seminars on negotiation and managing difficult conversations for government and business professionals in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Latin America, and the Middle East. She is a lecturer at Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School and Hass School of Business. Linda holds a J.D. degree cum laude from Harvard Law School and a B.S. in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin.

Geoffrey Powell
Geoff has been a member of HSSV’s board since February 2006 and has served as Treasurer since July 2006.  For sixteen years, Geoff served as President and member of the board of directors of Axon Instruments.  Prior to Axon Geoff served as a consultant to and CFO of Protein Design Labs, Vice President for Finance Planning and Administration for Zoecon Corporation and on the corporate staff of Ford Motor Company. 

Geoff is a graduate of Stanford University and holds masters degrees from the University of Washington and the Wharton Graduate School of Business. Geoff and his wife Verity have two grown children, two grandchildren, and live with their dog Bailey who was adopted from HSSV.

Steve Sullins
Steve joined the HSSV board in July 2010. Steve is an audit partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP's San Jose office.  He presently serves a variety of clients in the technology industry, and has previously served clients in the firm's London, Detroit and Saint Louis offices.

Previously, Steve has served on the boards of The Children's Center of Wayne County, and the Hoyleton Children's Home Foundation.

Steve holds an M.B.A. from Northwestern University and a B.S. in accounting from the University of Colorado.  He and his girlfriend, Amanda, have Jasper, a Boston terrier.
